Improving Predictions of Climate Change–Land Use Change Interactions

چکیده

Climate change and land use often interact, altering biodiversity in unexpected ways. Research into climate change–land (CC–LUC) interactions has so far focused on quantifying outcomes, rather than identifying the underlying ecological mechanisms, making it difficult to predict design appropriate conservation responses. We propose a risk-based framework further our understanding of CC–LUC interactions. By factors driving exposure vulnerability change, then examining how these are altered by (or vice versa), this will allow effects different interaction mechanisms be compared across geographic contexts, supporting efforts reduce loss from interacting stressors.

Improving predictions of summer climate change in the United States

[1] Across vast, agriculturally intensive regions of the United States, the spread in predictions of summer temperature and soil moisture under global warming is curiously elevated in current climate models. Some models show modest warming of 2–3C and little drying or slight moistening by the 22nd century, while at the other extreme are simulations with warming as large as 7–8C and 20– 40% redu...

On the importance of paleoclimate modelling for improving predictions of future climate change

We use an ensemble of runs from the MIROC3.2 AGCM with slab-ocean to explore the extent to which midHolocene simulations are relevant to predictions of future climate change. The results are compared with similar analyses for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and pre-industrial control climate. We suggest that the paleoclimate epochs can provide some independent validation of the models that is al...

Update on Climate Change Climate Change: Resetting Plant-Insect Interactions

Elevated CO2 and temperature are altering the interactions between plants and insects with important implications for food security and natural ecosystems. Ecologically, the acceleration of plant phenology by warming is generating mismatches between plants and insect pollinators. Similarly, shifting the rate of plant development relative to insect development can amplify or minimize the consequ...

Should we believe model predictions of future climate change?

Predictions of future climate are based on elaborate numerical computer models. As computational capacity increases and better observations become available, one would expect the model predictions to become more reliable. However, are they really improving, and how do we know? This paper discusses how current climate models are evaluated, why and where scientists have confidence in their models...

Predictions of avian Plasmodium expansion under climate change

Vector-borne diseases are particularly responsive to changing environmental conditions. Diurnal temperature variation has been identified as a particularly important factor for the development of malaria parasites within vectors. Here, we conducted a survey across France, screening populations of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) for malaria (Plasmodium relictum). We investigated whether va...
